Abstract

Introduction: Patient safety is a framework of organized activities that creates cultures, processes, procedures, behaviors, technologies, and environments in healthcare that consistently and sustainably reduce risks. It is also a critical priority in health systems worldwide, due to the millions of adverse events that occur annually in hospitals in low- and middle-income countries. This review analyzes innovative communication strategies employed by healthcare teams to strengthen patient safety that could be applied to Peruvian medical teams. Methodology: An systematic review was conducted using articles in English and Spanish published from 2020 to 2025, sourced from Scopus, ScienceDirect, PubMed, Scielo, and Google Scholar. Results: We reviewed 14 studies between 2020 and 2025 that evaluated the impact of communication strategies on patient safety. The most effective interventions included the TeamSTEPPS® and SBAR programs, which significantly improved structured communication, teamwork, and adverse event reporting. Likewise, institutional training and the use of visual educational tools showed a positive effect on the perception of safety among patients and health professionals. Conclusions: Strategies such as TeamSTEPPS™, SBAR, and adapted communication tools (whiteboards, pictograms) significantly improve performance, safety culture, and patient perception, reducing clinical errors. Among the most effective interventions are non-punitive communication, surgical checklists, and extensive training.
